Basic Needs Emergency Grant
The Basic Needs Emergency Grant (BNEG) supports students who have been unexpectedly financially impacted and are now experiencing hardships related to food, housing, and care assistance. Funds are awarded to students with financial need based on review of submitted documentation and information provided on either the California Dream Application or the FAFSA, if available.
We work closely with our Financial Crisis Response Team (FCRT) - a multidisciplinary team with multiple campus partners - to review requests regularly. We recognize that unexpected financial costs will arise, and although we cannot guarantee funding, we will always be here to assist in navigating all of the resources available to you.
The BNEG Fund is a centralized entry point for UC San Diego students to apply for emergency financial support. The fund administration is a collaboration between the Basic Needs Hub, Financial Aid & Scholarships Office, Division of Undergraduate Education (including the eight undergraduate colleges), the Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs (GEPA), and Student Affairs Case Management Services (SACM).
UC San Diego students registered and currently enrolled in undergraduate, graduate and professional programs are welcome to apply.
Please click on the links below to navigate to additional information:
- Grants are awarded on a case-by-case basis.
- We recommend students first meet with a financial aid counselor to check eligibility for a variety of funding resources.
- Students must be actively enrolled in the current term (e.g., Summer Session) to receive assistance for the grant - if eligible.
- The Financial Crisis Response Team (FCRT) is a representative campus committee that meets weekly to assess each case.
- By completing this application, you are agreeing to share the information included in this application with the application review team members including for the purpose of coordination and administration of these funds.

- No funds can be provided to purchase technology for remote learning or research, or assistive technology. If you would like to request a free loaner laptop, Wi-Fi hotspot, or other peripherals (e.g., webcam, headphones, etc.), please apply to the Student Technology Lending Request Form. Devices are limited and will be provided based on financial need.
- BNEG cannot support tuition and fees.
- BNEG cannot support course materials.
- BNEG cannot support Graduation Regalia.
Our program is designed to prioritize awarding our limited funding to registered and enrolled UC San Diego students who:
- Are currently houseless, at-risk of eviction or displacement, or experiencing intimate partner violence or sexual harassment and sexual violence
- Have limited loan availability, significant loan debt history, or have met the average loan borrowing amount for students of their year.
- Have experienced recent changes in employment, income, or expenses.
- Have limited or no support from family/guardians, savings, or assets
- Student inability or limited ability to access UC San Diego or off-campus resources during their hours of operation (e.g., due to dependent care or work obligations).
Please note: Current loan availability and loan debt history is taken into consideration, but taking out all available loans is not a requirement. For FAFSA filers, we look at Financial Aid data on the average loan debt history for students of their year. We recognize that non-FAFSA filers do not have the same level of access to loans.
Phase 1: Consider Your Resources (if Applicable)
- Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans
- For graduate students, if you have not filed a FAFSA, it is not required, and you are still eligible to apply!
- Utilize Basic Need Resources available to you
- Basic Needs offers an array of resources to assist students with housing, food, and financial assistance. Students are encouraged to utilize basic need resources prior to seeking the BNEG
- Meet with a financial aid counselor one-on-one to discuss your financial aid package. Financial aid counselors will walk through a holistic overview of resources available to you.
- Check out financial aid hours of operation, zoom drop in hours, and other forms of support available!
- Cost of Attendance Add On Request (COAOR)
- Students who are FAFSA/The California Dream Act Application (CADAA) filers and have been funded up to their cost of attendance will need to submit a COAOR in order to have space in their financial aid package to accept an award. This includes:
- Tuition and Fees
- Living Expenses (i.e: Food and Housing)
- Books, courses materials, supplies, and equipment
- Miscellaneous Personal Expenses
- Transportation Expenses
- Special Circumstances- Cost of Attendance Appeal
- Unexpected expenses can occur despite careful planning of your academic year budget. If you incur certain costs above the expenses shown on UC San Diego's estimated costs of attendance, the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office may be able to add them to your budget and cover them with student loans, based on funding availability. On occasion, other types of funding may be available such as work-study or, for Graduate students, departmental funds.
- Other types of financial support to seek (if applicable):
- Special Circumstances Appeal
- Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal
- Dependency Override/Independence Appeal
- Short-Term Emergency Loans for immediate need
Phase 2: Submit a Basic Needs Assistance Form (BNAF)
- Submit a Basic Needs Assistance Form
- If you are a student with dependents, click “students with dependents assistance form.” If you do not have a dependent, click “Basic Needs Assistance Form”
- We define students with dependents as “who may identify as a student parent, caregiver, and/or guardian”
- Schedule a virtual appointment with one of our full-time staff members!
- You will hear back from us within 2-3 business days after submission of form.
- Please note: students may experience a delay during holiday breaks and weekends as forms are not monitored
Phase 3: One-on-One Consultation
- These one-on-one consultations with our professional staff member are structured to empower students in their sense of agency and meet students where they are at by actively listening and offering resource assistance. These spaces allow students to share what challenges they are currently experiencing in order to provide the best support.
- Our hope is that students feel comfortable enough to share their current financial needs so we are honestly representing their request.
- The professional staff member will provide a holistic assessment of the student’s request and will determine if the student is eligible for consideration for the Basic Needs Emergency Grant.
- The professional staff member may submit the request to the Financial Crisis Response Team (FCRT) on behalf of a student. FCRT meets to assess students.
Phase 4: BNEG Outcome
- The professional staff member who met with the student during the one-on-one consultation will connect with the student regarding the final outcome.
- If the grant is awarded
- The Basic Needs Emergency Grant will be deposited within 5-7 business days from when the award was posted to TritonLink. If the award is not visible after 5-7 business days, students are encouraged to follow up with the professional staff member.
- There are two means of receiving the Basic Needs Emergency Grant:
- Sent by physical check to the address on file with the university.
- Sent by direct deposit, if set up. To set up direct deposit use this link.
- If you are not eligible for an award at this time
- FCRT is unfortunately unable to meet all requests due to limited funding. The FCRT team will support you in identifying other resources for further support.
